Indian women 'get wild' !!

** Indian women 'get wild' in US soap **Ashish Kumar Sen on a US web mini series which is creating ripples among Indianexpatriates.< http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/em/fr/-/2/hi/south_asia/7465261.stm >
Well my first reaction after reading this article on BBC news website was”What’s the big deal!”
India has always been proud of its history of varying cultures and traditions that speaks about its people as god fearing and principled; with Indian women being portrayed as figures of purity and motherhood. But whom are we kidding!
I agree to the fact that Indian women have always been known for being more principled and determined than the rest of the female clan and have always stood by their culture and beliefs. But we should not be blind folded. India is changing fast and so are its people; with Indian women being no exception. They have become quite independent and have started living the much loved free life, on their own principles and their own rules. Yes, many still abide by our cultural and tradition (again there is a question of what’s right according to the culture and what’s not, which is a never ending topic!), but not all!
We have a good amount of women in India (mostly in the urban India) who are enjoying the western lifestyle that they have adopted comfortably to satisfy their needs and comforts. Again, saying something is wrong and something is right is all up to people’s perspectives.
But the point is, why all the fuss about some Hollywood soap where some Indian actresses are playing some ultra modern roles and are rather being pictured as vamps. And do we have voice? What about the Indian media? Does it always go by the so called rules!??

A right activist quotes about the Hollywood series “By presenting working Indian women as deceitful vamps, [the series] has reinforced the harmful stereotypes of empowered Indian women" Hmm so what?? Is it totally wrong?? Of course, it doesn’t represent the whole lot of Indian women. But then have to agree to the fact that they are much closer to reality than the Indian soaps were the Indian women are always projected as sathi savithris!!

im not entirely with u on this one... i do agree that theres nothing so much to fuss abt in that series being so. (by the way, thats an opinion without having seen the series yet)
ur article seems to suggest ,at some point, that the cultured, traditional, indian woman n the modern, empowered indian woman r to different mutually exclusive entities. (correct me if im wrong) its possible that indian women dont fall in one of the two categories but lie in regions within a spectrum having the two as its extreme ends... in fact the cultured yet modern, traditional yet broad minded indian woman holds very much her own........ Of course all this is extrapolation and guess work.....

Secondly, theres a reverse effect... Soaps donot only function as expression of reality.. at some level the reality is affected by the expression if u knw wt i mean.....

neway, thought provoking.. get back to me on this one..

cheers

Well thanks for your comments..lemme make things clear..

I definitely agree that there are traditional yet modern, broad minded indian women..infact sm of the strongest minds around..bt there is also an other side..a small bt good amount of women in india that may bear similarities to those being pictured in these soaps..so its reality..nothin made up..

Yes ur right about the reverse effect..bt is the media stopping..forget abt women..what abt vulgorous scenes n murder n drinkin n al that...they show it all cos thats reality n yes they may have the reverse effect on people ,infact i have read sm examples too..bt then are they stopping??No..So why this??
Well yea it is a thought provoking n an endless topic..:)

hey deeps u forgot komolika, romala sikand etc etc...our own indian televamps!!!!!!!!!!apart frm the sati savutris they also stole the show with their performances.....even though ppl hated them......There is nothin wrong in playin a negative character....its all abt the character n hw u perform....and ofcourse u cant compare reel n real........well its a gud break for actresses in the series.....gabar was more famous than jai n veeru!!!!
readin this article the international viewership for the web series would definitely increase as they r hopin.....just another advertisin stratergy to make the book hit before it releases ..success of the prologue adds up to d books popularity....i dont think it raises any question on indian females n their culture.....
keep bloggin deeps...
miss ya

Nice ! Well crafted !!

As a fellow blogger I d like to say that, this is a very good writeup and the idea of what you think is clearly delivered. To be able to express how you exactly feel about something and for people to understand it the same way, is a great leap in writing skill, I believe.

There is a classy flow in the writing. Keep thinking and blogging about it !!

Cheers !!
